The toner
that you use for your laser printer needs much more care and attention than the
kind used in typical inkjet printers. For one, laser printer toners come in
powder form, and fuse with the paper with the use of heat, electrical charges,
and pressure. This difference means that laser printer cartridges can suffer from unique problems.
Whenever
a new cartridge is installed, you might notice that the print quality seems
rather light in color, or worse, the whole thing just stops working. When this
happens, pull out your toner cartridge and look at it closely, as this might be
the root of the problem. The cartridge should come with at least one protective
strip to keep from spilling over while in transport, so be sure to remove all
these strips prior to installation.
Do you
see random marks on the backside of the page you're printing? Your cartridge
might be leaking; to check, open the printer's toner access door and look for
signs of toner dust all over the place. You might need to replace your
cartridge and clean the entire inside of the printer before using it again.
Print
drums could also wear out with time, and pose a bit of a problem since they are
often found in the cartridge. If you're buying a new toner cartridge, make sure
that the drum is new as well, since there are manufacturers that might use
worn, old drums on brand-new cases.
